Em is a new musical telling the story of a teenage mother in 1960s Liverpool. The play follows Em, as she moves from being ‘the’ couple with Tom to being a single, expectant mother fighting to keep her baby.
My brief was to use “Cathy Come Home” and dirty washing as inspiration for the set. With a cast of seventeen and a lot of activity on stage, the key was to keep it simple. I decided to use four benches that could be used in different formations creating different settings. This along with Matt Whale’s lighting moved the play along from scene to scene.
